Janis!

My name is Janis and I am the Founder and  Owner of Surf's Pup!

The concept of Surf’s Pup was born throughout my time as a practicing Physician Associate in Colorado and California. During those years, I survived some of the most challenging times working in health care with the comfort and unconditional love that only a dog can provide, and in that time I also came to realize the importance of maintaining a healthy work life balance for both physical and mental health. I know how hard it can be to take care of our pets while also taking care of ourselves, so my overall goal with Surf’s Pup is to help my fellow humans find a healthy daily balance by taking care of your pups in a safe, loving, and fun environment so you can rest easy knowing your Pup is having a great adventure with Best Pet Care Team in Portland!

I also have 2 rescue pitties of my own that are the light of my world, Mystertee and Lily!   These babies fill my days with endless amounts of love and joy, and it is my promise to all of our clients that your Surf’s Pups will be cared for in the same manner that I care for my own, because I know how important they are to you and your family–they are family!

Outside of providing Adventures, we have also added additional services in Surf’s Pup to continue our mission in canine wellness.  In the fall of 2021, I decided to use some of those medical skills and became certified to teach Pet First Aid and CPR and I have really enjoyed offering these courses to my community!  Unfortunately, our little family has survived all kinds of medical emergencies including CCL tears, cervical and thoracic IVDD requiring emergent surgery, and most recently a devastating cancer diagnosis.  My own pups, Mystertee and Lily and I have persevered through so much and I bring all of these personal experiences to the table when teaching these courses because I sincerely understand how traumatic it can be to see our animals suffer.  If there is just one animal I can save by sharing this set of skills and knowledge, it is worth every second!

I also have a passion for feeding pups real, fresh food and have been making my own homemade dog food for years.  I have watched the incredible health changes made from the transition from kibble to human grade, fresh food in my dogs and my husband’s dog and it is absolutely incredible how much more they are thriving!  Lily’s allergies are under control, all of their fur is soft and shiny, they have smaller and less gross poops (this is important), and overall lots more energy!   I decided to take this passion a bit further and completed a training course as Certified Professional Canine Nutritionist in the summer of 2025 and look forward to offering nutrition consultations to our community focusing on feeding fresh and real food to our dogs.
